Leclair Performance Horses would like to welcome you to Legacy Ranch and offer you a glimpse of what it is like during a typical day at the Ranch…

Our main concern is that the horses in our program are sound, healthy and in the right frame of mind to accept training. Quality care of the horses is crucial to us…as Jared would say “if they (the horses) are not healthy and sound and can not be ridden then we can not be paid to train
them.” We expect a lot of our horses and in order for them to compete at the highest level of competition they must receive the best care possible.

It is our goal that every horse gets out of its stall everyday. Our horses are ridden five days and given off two days per week. During the two days that they are not being ridden they are turned out in a pasture or put on the walker. Due to the intense training that our horses receive we believe that it is important that they have a “mental break.”

We have found that our horses really enjoy their time in the pasture to run, play, hang out and eat grass or relax and stretch their legs on the walker. This “free mental time” for the horses enables them to accept training with a good frame of mind and a great attitude.

We place a lot of emphasis on the importance of saddling our horses with the correct support and protection in order to prevent injuries. Before our horses are ridden they are prepared by knowledgeable grooms that take the utmost care in preparing them for their daily workouts.

We use only the finest in grooming and tack products. Whether it be the moisturizer we spray in the manes and tails by Healthy Hair Care, the leg protection from Pro Equine, the saddle pads etc. at Paul Taylor’s, the saddle and headstalls from Kyle Tack, or the bits from Kerry Kelley every product that we use is essential in the training process.

Presentation is extremely important to us at LPH therefore we keep our horses clipped and clean at all times.

Once the horses are saddled they are tied in the arena and learn to stand patiently until it is their turn to be worked.

After they have had their two days off and are ready to begin their week of training we ease them back into the swing of things by lunging them under saddle before they are ridden. For their first day back they are either free lunged in the round pen or on a long line in the arena.

Lunging the horses is important for two reasons 1 it gives the horses a 5-10min time period in which to warm up their muscles and tendons and 2 to mentally prepare to be trained.

Our horses are now ready for the most important part of their day…learning how to be the best reining horse they can be. The components that we feel are very important in our training program are patience, consistency, practice and perseverance. It is vital to us that each horse be treated as a unique individual and to create a program that works for each horse and rider. We strive to create a training program that fits each horse and not make the horse fit the program.

Every training method does not work the same for every horse and the final product, a finished Reiner, can be reached through many different training techniques. Our goal is to enable each horse to reach its greatest potential as well as being sure not to push the horse past their mental and physical capabilities.

Upon completion of their daily training workouts the horses are often put on the walker for 10-15min for their cool down period. This time is as important as the warm up and gives their muscles, tendons, and ligaments the proper amount of time to recover from their intense training session.

Our horses are professional athletes and as such they require the quality treatment that any pro athlete would receive. The treatment of horses in our care consists of daily warm ups, work outs, cool downs as well as preventive medicine/maintenance including Hydro Therapy: Aquatread and Cold salt water treatments, Game Ready, Acuscope and Myoscope therapy, chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy and acupuncture.

Once the horses have been properly treated it is time for them to go to a show to exhibit all of the maneuvers that they have learned.

Before our horses travel to one of the many shows that we attend they are wrapped with quilts and standing wraps to help support and protect their legs for the journey ahead.

After being wrapped they are then loaded onto one of Leclair Performance Horses’ rigs to safely travel to the show grounds.
